in reply to: lost FXT files #19174

I think there is a bug in the ‘Make file read only’ option.
If this is set I can see that (on Win7,64) for these ‘users’ on my PC (thisPC)

      SYSTEM
gooly (thisPCgooly) [me as user – and owner of the files]
      root (thisPCroot) [me as admin]
      Home Users (thisPCHome Users)
      Administrators (thisPCAdministrator)

the rights of each fxt-file is as follows:

      SYSTEM full..write
      gooly (thisPCgooly) full..write (wrong)
      root (thisPCroot) full..write
Home Users (thisPCHome Users) read, start, read (ok, but there are no further users)
      Administrators (thisPCAdministrator) full..write

That is most probalbly the reaso why the ‘Make file read only’ option obviously does not work:
The individual user (who has started Tickstory) gate full access which is not restricted. The restriction of the user groupe seems to be nor enough.
I feel sorry for you because I know under Linux this a lot easier to handle!

    Well don’t I need the fxt-files for back-testing?
Can I – the way you said – create m1-, m5-, m15-, -files in tester/history with which I can backtest?

To me happened the same last Sunday, Jan 5. They had all the time stamp of that day!
Like before with prev. versions I created m1-fxt files in tester/history for 28 pairs, which took a lot of time as I had to initiate it pair by pair.
But yesterday practically all pair-files were gone??
    Only 2 remained with time stamp 05.01.2014 FTX-Files: EURGBP1_0.fxt, 267MB and USDCAD1_0.fxt 433MB and one EURUSD1_0.fxt 0 kB(!) and timestamp 7.1.2014.
This is exactly the time I started Tickstory ONLY to launch am mt4 for backtesting. Well backtesting failed: Fiel not found 😈

Could it be that because I set: delete prev hst and fxt-files has deleted my FXT-set despite my Ducaskopy-tickdata-base was not available – it is on a usb-hd that is normally not connected – and despite I did not ask Tickstory to create new hist.-files Tickstory has hasty deleted existing files?
Nothing else has touched or used the files in tester/history – that I can confirm.
    hhmmppff

PS: Do I need HST-File-creation if I only want to backtest?

    Well I
    – start Tickstory and
    – click right mouse button over a pair
    – select export in file (German: Datei)
I get a window to enter from..to, TimeFrame, .. file name (pre-defined {Symbol}.csv (here I can choose some other options)
but I don’t have a button to select the folder where it’ll be created.
    I didn’t try to enter a ‘hard-coded’ path “c:\…”
So I searched a while until I found it in the Tickstory folder.

    Hi,
I am having similar problems with your Tickdata: Spread and Time-shift!

    1)
I am assuming that if I get the Tickdata I’ll get the spread of the actual ticks?
But in mt4’s strategy-tester I can define a spread of current (which is the spread of my broker?), 2,5,10,… which will be a spread of 2,5,10,.. Points? On your data-option-tab by default a 2 pip spread is set – this doesn’t count at all?

    2) If I run a backtest and start the backtest Sunday 31.03.2013 the first bar from where new bars are painted in mt4’s startegy-tester has the time-stamp: 2013.03.31 21:00.

Dukaskopy has GMT my actual broker (Hot-Forex) has a 3 hour difference. Which program is adding the time shift when??
I’d like to use pure GMT on my backt-tests and on my optimizations as I get this from the tickdata provider!
Adding a shift and summer or winter time should take place when the history data files are created in my opinion!!

    Regards,

We can never eliminate Case 2 unless MT4 decides to support the use of tick data. Until then, you need to launch the application via Tickstory because this step prevents MT4 from deleting the tick data files that Tickstory generates.

Hmm, but what would that mean if you will not support any more the start of mt4? The uselessness of tickdata?

Wouldn’t it be possible for TickStory to create out of the tickdata-base the history files that the mt4 can use without being started by Tickstory?

I would suggest an extra option to create beside a tickdata-history a mt4-history from the data dld by Tickstory for the version after the next version – as I really would like you to enable several parallel starts of mt4 as I think that this would be the biggest advantage of the next version!!
    Anyway Thanks a lot,

    Ok, I see it’s from Feb. 12..

Actual my optimization is about to run 68 hours, three optimizations like this will take 8.5 days.

Instead of 8.5 day these three optis running parallel could have been done with in 2.5 days (4 kernel cpu) so three times faster (by this feature) means getting the results 1 week earlier!

Especially ‘machine’-written EA aren’t coded in a fast way.

I hope you understand the importance of this!
Please put this in the very next version!!

Well, the situation is pretty easy.
I used TickStory to create it’s tickdata history files for all time frames.

    Case 1:
I start Tickstory and from there the MT4 (F8-button) no problem,
I can start backtests and the optimization in the mt4’s strategy-tester..

    Case 2:
After that I directly start mt4 (without Tickstory) and start now mt4’s strategy-tester – nothing happens and in the journal tab I read File could not be opened (or s.th. like that)

    Case 3:
Now again I start TickStory and from there mt4 – backtests and optimization start without any problem..

    Okay?

Let me change my suggestion about the info of what Tickstory has done.

I think better would be if Tickstory looks up in the appropriate tester- and history-folders of the defined MT4
may only for the the Symbols (Pairs) that do have valid Tick-histories and shows what are the first and the last date. All other pairs may have no further information.
So each time I start Tickstory I will be informed on which pairs I can start backtests immediately and on which I first have to create the tick-history-files.
I think that’s better and I guess easier for you to program and it’s all we need!
    Thanks Carl

Please understand me correctly, I want to start the SAME program c:..myMetatraderterminal.exe several times. This way I don’t have to distribute all the history-files which can be for one pair around 1GB, to the various MT4-installations!!

Is there any reason why you need the Tickstory launcher to work instead?

Well first of all I don’t expect that Tickstory starts a program to do what itself can do: run mt4 with tick-use,
second I would feel better if Tickstory would give me a choice in this case:
    – do you want to start mt4 by Birt’s TDS
    – or be me, Tickstory,
if Tickstory shall have this option.

Yes you are right now I have downloaded s.th. to check next time. I’ve already had s.th. but after some time it requests mony, so I deleted it and ran again into that ‘trap’.

I think you have two options to get the highest price of the last 5 years.
    1) Just to check: open a monthly chart of the your pair (Symbol()) and look how far back your provider offers data. If you find enough data you just have write in your indicator:

     iHigh(NULL,PERIOD_MN1,iHighest(NULL,_PERIOD_MN1,..)).

I see right now mine goes back until 2006 – enough I guess.

2.) If this fails, create a data-file of what even candle you like (monthly perhaps) and then use the FileOpen() .. to rtead and check or you have to use the Windows.dll to read files out of the file-folder of the mt4.

    Hi,
sorry for my delay, I just read your priv. message and dld. and installed the v1.0 and failed same problem 🙁
Than I read that you have v1.1 and de-installed 1.0 and installed 1.1 and FINE!
I installed it to one of ‘my’ folders and neither during the installation nor after the start of Tickstory I was asked for the Admin-PWD!

    Thanks – great job!
    Calli
PS: pls if you want me s.th. to test write me again a pm – it’s faster 🙂

    HI,
I guess that’s why Birt’s TDS allows you to set either the use of the real spread of Bid and Ask of the tick-data or the volumes of a bar.
But one has to launch MT4 by either your program or Birt’s TDS and speculated that this might enable an option to manipulate the data ‘send’ to the MT4-terminal?
    Thanks for all your effort,
    Gooly
