custom symbol settings

I see you can set the symbol settings but from what I have been going through, you must set that to the broker symbol or it won't work. Is there any way around this or am I missing something? Basically I want to set a custom position size and tick value. I have a broker that will give me lots of 1 unit but they don't have a demo for it so I wanted to hack it. It looked like it could be done but maybe I was mistaken.

I assume you've set the tick value and lot step settings? What was the result?
