Problem with MT4 loading Data - MT4 Hangs - No error

Hi,

I don't get any errors in the Journal apart from the typical read-only dialogue. My issue is that it simply hangs!

I have a paid version of Tick Story, so the latest copy. And MT 4 is build 950 which it's supposed to work with. I tested on another machine with 5 months of USD / CHF and it seems to run.

On this machine running Windows 10 (not sure if this is a issue?) the hanging is just very annoying, I attempt to click STOP and then it freezes the entire program and I need to shut it down.

I exported over 5 years of Tick Data from 4 currencies over the past few days using the free Tickstory app. When I then realised it won't work with my version of MT4 Build 950 I upgraded.

Does anyone know the issue? Thanks,

Hi Matt,

We have tested successfully with Windows 10 so this should not be the issue. You may be coming across the 4GB FXT data file limitation which is due to MT4 not being able to handle data files larger than this size. Instead, it is recommended that you break your back-tests up into approximately 2 year periods which usually is within the limitation. You can find out more in our FAQ under the topic "Q. Thanks for the reply, do you mean I should download in 2 year parts or run the back test over 2 years?

I get this freezing issue even when I run my backtest over several days or weeks. I realise now if I leave it for 15 mins or so, when I come back it actually shows results.

The problem now is there is no progress status and no way to know how long remains especially over an optimisation test.

Hi Matt,

Optimizations often take some time to run, so please be patience especially if you have a custom EA that might be taking some time to process the voluminous data.
The suggestion is to break your back-test up into more manageable periods, so you would export say from 2012-2014 and then back-test this period. Then, export from 2014-2016 and back-test this period separately. This will avoid the MT4 data limitation and also allow you assess the results faster over the 2 year period.

Thanks for this. If I already have 5 or 6 years exported into MT4 for say the EUR/USD currency, how do I erase that and re-export only 2014-2016 for example?

Hi Matthew,

Simply regenerate your export for that selected period and it will erase and rebuild the existing dataset.
