This OP is so important, it should probably be easier to find. google searches turn up old posts stating that variable spread doesn't work yet for Birts.

I'm wondering if, when dealing with variable spreads, the Extra padding setting will increase the ask only or will it also decrease the bid?

Hi Bendx77,

Thanks for the feedback. Do you have the original link that is turning up? If it's on our side we'll update the relevant information.
Regarding your question, the spread is a value that is embedded within the MT4 data file. 'Extra padding' will add this value onto this spread value. Internally, this spread value is then effectively added to the Bid to get the Ask price. So MT4 will calculate the Ask as follows:

Ask = Bid + (Spread + Padding)

As far as your EA calcuations go, you don't need to do anything special. You can just continue to do the typical "Spread = Bid-Ask" to work out the spread. Obviously the spread that is returned will be the variable spread value plus and padding you have added.

Hope this answers your question.

Dear support,
We have version 1.82. now. Is the steps to set the spread as described on https://tickstory.com/articles/tickstor ... -released/ still necessary.
For this new version 1.8.2, can I just directly set it on mt4 strategy tester and skip the 3rd steps (3. Select the “Control points” modelling type and press the ‘Test’ button. You can immediately stop the back-test once it has started. The selected spread will now take effect.) ?

Hi Davebaz,

The spread bug was addressed in Metatrader Build 970 so as long as you're using this build or greater, you don't need to do this workaround.

KInd regards.
