Tick and bars

Post by Lifeadventurer »

Hi, what's the difference between bars and ticks here? In the youtube video, the person was downloading the bar, but since we need tick data, do we need to download the tick?

Hi there,

A "tick" is the most granular piece of pricing information. It occurs when there is a change in the bid or ask price of the instrument. A bar, such as "15 minutes", is composed of all the ticks that occurred in that 15-minute time-frame. The resulting "bar" is the Open, High, Low and Closing price that occurred in the underlying tick data for that given period.

Depending on what your requirements are, you can choose to use either tick data or bar data. In the case of importing into MT5, you will need to do both.

Hope this helps.
